2019 SPECIAL CLASSES AND EVENTS:

Make and Take Bulb Planter Class 

          February 16th, 1:00 - 3:00 pm

Must pre-register for this class, Fee: $20, includes pot, soil, and 10 bulbs..

Learn how to make an indoor bulb planter for spring flowers. Materials,

guided planting instructions, and care guide included in event cost.

Participants will make their pot in class and take home that day. 




Container Gardening Class 

          March 23rd, 1:00 - 3:00 pm

No pre-registration or fee

Instructional class on why and how to do container gardening, for vegetables, fruits,

herbs, annuals, or perennials, from single pots to backyard raised beds. Class will

cover the benefits of growing plants in containers, potential pitfalls, and main

strategies for success.




Landscaping from A to Z

          April 4th, 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Pre-registration required, no fee

This will be a comprehensive lecture class on designing landscapes that can thrive in the

central South Dakota area.  This is the perfect event for anyone considering updating the

plantings around their house or business, whether it's a blank slate or there are existing

plants. Instruction will be given to how the effects of slope, soil quality, facing direction,

shade, sun, wind, and use of the area should affect your plant choices. Recommended

plants for the Pierre area will be presented along with plenty of time for questions at the end.




Make & Leave Your Own Planter 
          April 16th, 6:00 - 8:00 pm  --  UPDATE, sorry this class is full

          April 23rd, 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Pre-registration required, Fee: $30 (includes 3 annual plants, soil, and care) + any extra materials

(pot, more than 3 plants, decorative materials, etc.)

This is a very popular class so make sure to save your space early!  Participants will be given

guided instructions on how to pick out and then plant their own container for their deck, patio,

or yard. Event fee will cover 3 annual plants, soil, and care of the planters at our greenhouse until

May 15th. Planters or baskets can be brought from home or new ones bought during the event.

Basic rules for planting containers (height, filler, cascading) will be covered along with appropriate

plants depending planned location of the containers.



Earth Day Celebration

          April 28th, time TBA

No pre-registration or fee

In celebration of Earth Day, we hold this no fee educational event, inviting various groups

and individuals as guest speakers.  Stations are set up throughout our greenhouses (and

outside if it's nice) and the audience rotates through each station at their own pace.  Primarily

lecture-type presentations, speakers showed how to use parts of plants for food, how to

compost, how to make a butterfly garden, and other gardening how to's.



Make & Take an Herb Planter 

          May 4th, 5:30 - 7:00 pm

Pre-registration required, Fee:  $25 includes pot, soil, 3 herbs, & instructions

May the Force Be With You!!  On Star Wars Day we'll have all of the herbs and instruction for

you so that when you're done you'll be driving home carrying a new herb garden for your porch,

patio, or window sill.  You'll learn which plants to grow together and how to take care of them to

give you fresh herbs throughout the season and longer!



Open House & Build a Succulent Planter Class

          Open House - May 5th, 12:00 - 5:00 pm

          Succulent Class - May 5th, 5:00 - 7:00 pm

Open House: free

Come celebrate the start of the traditional outdoor gardening season with our annual Open House!

Free beverages, come smell the fresh dirt (OK, potting mix), see what we're growing, maybe pet a cat

or two, and take advantage of some early season deals.

After we close for the day, the build a succulent class starts.  Many plants to choose from, we'll be

there to help you put a successful combination of plants together.  Bring your own pot or purchase

one in the store, and take your creation home at the end of the class.



Wine & Design a Planter

A popular class, these fill up quick so register early!  Great fun with friends, family, and co-workers.  Bring pots from home or pick up new ones in the store.  The only limit to what you can build is your imagination!  We'll be there to help choose the right plants for the right pot and location, and if you need help planting them we'll show you how.  Best yet, we're the ones who clean up the mess!  Because of the wine part, please no one under 21, thanks!



Fairy Gardens for Kids

          July 18th, 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Pre-registration required, Fee:  $30  (includes 2 plants, 1 fairy, soil, bowl, and rocks) +

any extra materials (more plants, additional fairy decorations, etc.)

This is a really fun class too!  Mom or dad come along and help with the design

design and planting of a fairy (or if you prefer "miniature") garden.  We're here

to help as well.  We always make sure we're stocked up on supplies before these

classes.  Kids have a fun time and take home their creation that day.

Bring the Outdoors In

          September 14th, 1:00 - 3:00 pm

Pre-registration and fees TBA

As the growing season comes to a close, there are some things you might want to bring inside.  Houseplants, some annuals, veggie planters, herbs,  and even out of our zone perennials.  This class will give you tips and ideas that will help you have the best success.  And let's not forget how to bring only the plants in and not those pesky pests!



4th Annual Fall Festival

          October 19th, 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

No pre-registration, Fees:  kid games and hay bale maze

1-4 tickets per game, each ticket costs $0.25.

This is one of the areas best family fun events of the

season!  This event just keeps getting bigger each year

with new activities being added.  Over 20 vendors selling

their products and services all inside the greenhouses.  You won't go hungry with mid-day food sales benefiting the Riggs high school

choir.

11 am - 3 pm kid games, face and pumpkin painting, and the area's only hay bale maze.

3 - 5 pm more of an "older" crowd fun with the Hidden Timber Band and free wine and beer samples.

And of course our store, nursery, and greenhouses will be open for shopping as well!

Holiday Open House

          December 1st, 12:00 - 3:00 pm

No pre-registration or fees.

We'll have the coffee and hot cider ready, come and enjoy the start of our Christmas season.  Plenty of seasonal plants and products to give your home or business that holiday spark and houseplants galore  It's just a good time, and don't forget to buy a gift card for your gardener friend (heck, buy one for yourself!!).

          December 1st, 3:00 - 5:00 pm

          December 5th, 4:00 - 7:00 pm

Pre-registration required, Fee:  $10 plus materials (total cost is usually $40-80).

These have been very popular classes so make sure to reserve your spot early.

Bring a pot from home or purchase one in the store, we'll have all of the winter

greenery, pine cones, birch logs, berry branches, bows, and dogwood branches.

We'll also be there to help you make a season statement for your front steps at your home or office.

​We offer a wide variety of educational and informational opportunities throughout the year.  From time to time we have social events as well.

Some of our seminars will be no-cost, others may have a registration fee to cover the cost of materials and supplies.  Some seminars will be completely informational while others will be hands-on how to classes where participants will literally get their hands dirty while making something.  Please be aware that some seminars may have limits on the numbers of participants, so please read through the descriptions to see if pre-registration via phone or email will be necessary.  All seminars and workshops will be held at the Garden Center unless otherwise noted.
